Finding Focal Species: Fisher, Otter, Mink & Bobcat
Tracking wide-ranging carnivores as indicators of habitat connectivity
Join Sophie for an hour-long exploration of the tracks and sign of Vermont’s wide-ranging carnivores—and the other species we commonly confuse them with! Fisher, Otter, Mink & Bobcat require large expanses of connected forest, wetland, and shoreline habitat to find food and shelter, and to raise their young. Much of Tracking Connection’s work revolves around picking up on the trails of these “focal species” or “habitat connectivity indicator species” to identify wildlife corridors, road crossings, and important habitat.
This presentation (and special fundraiser event) is intended for volunteers participating in these wildlife monitoring efforts as well as anyone interested in learning how to identify and interpret the tracks and sign of these animals. The talk will feature stories from the trail, lots of examples and identification tips, and insight into the ecology of these animals. Come learn what it’s like to walk in their footsteps.
