Accelerating the Pace of Wetlands Restoration

Although coastal and inland wetlands are now protected from most forms of development, historic impacts continue to degrade these systems, affecting water quality, flood resilience, fish passage, and ecosystem health. The scope of need is large – in Massachusetts alone there are 3,000 dams, nearly 30,000 road/stream crossings, and thousands of acres of salt marshes and abandoned cranberry bogs with ongoing impacts from old fill, ditches, embankments, and water control structures. These impacts can be reversed using proven restoration techniques. Learn about efforts to increase the pace of restoration and to reduce the cost and complexity of permitting these beneficial projects.
