Firefly Conservation in the National Park Service
Join NPS and the Xerces Society for a webinar all about fireflies and how parks can get involved in conservation efforts for these amazing insects! We’re delighted to share a short introduction to fireflies and their conservation status before diving into the Xerces Firefly Atlas. We’ll also highlight several case studies that show different ways parks are engaging in firefly conservation efforts and provide ideas for ways you can get involved too.
Paula Capece works with the Biological Resources Division where she serves as the At-Risk Species Recovery Lead and also chairs the NPS At-Risk Species Technical Working Group. Paula supports parks and regions in the design and implementation of proactive species conservation programs benefitting at-risk species. Her work helps to connect NPS to the broader strategies and partnerships aimed at achieving range-wide species recovery goals.
Candace Fallon is a Senior Conservation Biologist at the Xerces Society, where she leads the organization’s firefly program and oversees the Firefly Atlas, a collaborative community science project aimed at better understanding and conserving firefly populations in the US and Canada. Candace also serves as the US and Canada regional coordinator for the IUCN Firefly Specialist Group and has worked with other members of this group to assess the conservation status of over 130 North American firefly species.
Tracy Valerius is the Inventory and Assessment Program Lead for the Inventory and Monitoring Division. Tracy leads the alignment of the Natural Resource Inventory, Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory, and Natural Resource Condition Assessment programs that deliver timely, actionable science to parks, strengthening partnerships, and providing accessible scientific information.
