The Amazing Monarch Butterfly: Global Stories and Local Monitoring Efforts

January 19, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

For hundreds of years, the residents of Michoacán, Mexico, considered the early November arrival of monarch butterflies — which coincides with their celebration of Dia de los Muertos — to represent the souls of their departed ancestors. It wasn’t until 1975, however, that Canadian researchers learned that this region of Mexico was where millions of monarchs spent their winters.

Join Andy Chapman and Harris Center ecologist Karen Seaver to explore the fascinating life and migration of the monarch butterfly. Andy will share photos and videos from his 2011 trip to two butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico and talk about the tagging research that led to the discovery of these overwintering sites, and Karen will highlight ways you can get involved in local monitoring of this iconic insect.
