“What marine microfossils can tell about Antarctica’s climate past” with Dr. Mark Leckie

January 15, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Humans have learned so much about Earth’s climate history from scientific ocean drilling. In 2018, International Ocean Discovery (IODP) Expedition 374 drilled in the Ross Sea of Antarctica. In this talk, Dr. Leckie will explore Antarctica’s climate past based on this recent coring expedition, and consider the very real threats to the stability of the Antarctic Ice Sheet today due to global warming with implications for global sea level rise. Participants will learn about some of the scientific tools – including microfossils and their geochemistry – to understand when, why, and how fast Antarctica’s climate changed in the past.
