The Risks of Over-Reliance on Gas Power Plants

April 19 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The US over-reliance on gas power plants presents significant risks. Gas plants are much more vulnerable to severe winter weather and extreme heat than gas proponents acknowledge, and plants can fail at alarming rates in extreme weather—even as their carbon pollution increases the risks of such events. Meanwhile, proposals to cut those carbon emissions with carbon capture, biomethane, or hydrogen can bring serious downsides of their own.

The Union of Concerned Scientists invites you to join a virtual discussion to hear from our experts about the true reliability of gas power plants, the hidden downsides of technologies and fuels to cut gas plant carbon emissions, and what it means for a just transition to clean energy.

Speakers:
• John Rogers, Senior Energy Analyst
• Mark Specht, Western States Energy Manager

Moderator:
• Chitra Kumar, Managing Director, Climate & Energy Program
