Mist Netting + Bird Banding Demo with Berkshire Bird Observatory at Berkshire Biodiversity Day

September 24, 2023 @ 7:00 am - 10:00 am

Join Ben Nickley of Berkshire Bird Observatory (BBO) for an early morning mist-netting demo during the 14th Berkshire Biodiversity Day (aka Berkshire BioBlitz). This demonstration is an excellent opportunity for people to experience some of the biodiversity surveying methods used to monitor birds. Ben will go through the banding process, which entails putting an identification ring around the birds’ legs (sometimes referred to as banding), before sending them back on their way.

This demonstration is one of many activities happening during this year’s Berkshire Bioblitz that’s taking place on September 23–24, from noon to noon, at April Hill Education and Conservation Center, the headquarters for Greenagers. In addition to this demonstration, there will be presentations and guided walks led by experts, all of which are free and open to the public.

DATE: Sunday, September 24

TIME: 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM

LOCATION: Meet at April Hill (Greenagers), 62 N Undermountain Rd, South Egremont, MA (Link to map)

Biological surveys and expert-led walks will be conducted in Bow Wow Woods — a 50-acre parcel of land just off Rte 41 on Bow Wow Rd – which was recently acquired by Greenagers and will soon be protected by a conservation restriction to be held by the Sheffield and Egremont Land Trusts. There are two half-mile trail loops in Bow Wow Woods: one on relatively flat ground and another that descends a small hillside before running alongside vernal pools and wetlands. All other activities will take place at April Hill.
