Ancient Stories, Great Floods, and the Future of Earth’s Climate

June 2, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

On June 2 at 7pm, join Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for a virtual Ned Ames Honorary Lecture featuring Ben Strauss, CEO and Chief Scientist at Climate Central.

Discover how a 10,000-year-old aboriginal story upended everything climate scientist Ben Strauss thought he knew about the threat we face from sea level rise, and set him on a years-long journey to discover more wisdom from our ancient elders. The Book of Genesis, Hindu epics, and indigenous stories from across the world all hide historical lessons about what we can expect if we continue to heat up our planet and melt the ice that’s still left – and what we can do about it.

Strauss is an expert on sea-level rise and is the architect of Surging Seas, a suite of maps, tools, and visualizations. He has testified before the U.S. Senate and been cited by the White House and the United Nations. His research has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and many other leading media outlets. He holds a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University, an MS in Zoology from the University of Washington, and a BS in Biology from Yale University.

This event is free and open to all. Questions to the speaker may be submitted in advance. Registration is required to access Zoom login details.
