Join Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT) at Pittsfield\u2019s Burbank Park to help remove Hardy Kiwi (Actinidia arguta<\/i>), a rapidly spreading invasive vine that threatens our native ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Originally introduced as an ornamental plant, hardy kiwi has become a serious problem across parts of the Northeast, including Berkshire County,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/b><\/p>\n

MA. Once established, this fast-growing vine forms dense mats several feet deep on the forest floor and climbs high into the canopy, creating thick “curtains” that smother native plants, shrubs, and even mature trees. These areas\u2014sometimes called \u201camphitheaters\u201d\u2014become barren monocultures that threaten biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.<\/p>\n

What to Expect:<\/strong>
\nOn this workday, we\u2019ll focus on cutting and pulling hardy kiwi vines\u2014particularly removing any fruit before it can be eaten by wildlife and spread further. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, get active, and connect with others who care about protecting our local environment.\u00a0Lunch and refreshments will be provided.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who Can Participate:<\/strong>
\nEveryone is welcome, regardless of age or experience! Volunteers should be able to walk on uneven ground for about 10 minutes to reach the work site.<\/p>\n

Why It Matters:<\/strong>
\nYour efforts will directly support native wildlife habitat and help preserve the health and diversity of our local forests.<\/p>\n

Come Prepared:<\/strong>
\nWe recommend wearing\u00a0long pants <\/strong>and\u00a0long socks, <\/strong>along with\u00a0closed-toed shoes<\/strong>. Please\u00a0bring a full bottle of water<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/b>Pulling vines isn’t easy work; we want everyone to stay safe and hydrated! If you have your own work\u00a0gloves, loppers,<\/strong> or\u00a0pruning shears<\/strong>, please bring those along. Otherwise, you can borrow some from BEAT.<\/p>\n
