{"id":7476,"date":"2013-05-25T09:21:34","date_gmt":"2013-05-25T13:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/?page_id=7476"},"modified":"2020-06-17T06:52:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-17T10:52:00","slug":"connecting-for-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/connecting-for-wildlife\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecting for Wildlife: Improving Roads for Motorist Safety and Habitat Connectivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BEAT&#8217;s <strong><em>Connecting for Wildlife<\/em><\/strong> program strives to\u00a0improve habitat connectivity and motorist safety in Western Massachusetts.\u00a0Roads represent a significant barrier to wildlife movement, subdividing the landscape, fragmenting and degrading habitat, and given traffic, acting as a conspicuous source of wildlife mortality.\u00a0To address this issue BEAT is collaborating with transportation planners, biologists, universities, and locals to identify, survey, and analyze road segments within linkage zones (also known as wildlife corridors).<\/p>\n<p>In short, Connecting for Wildlife aspires to<em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">maximize motorist safety<\/span> <\/em>by reducing vehicle wildlife collisions and <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">minimize the ecological footprint of roadways<\/span><\/em> by improving landscape connectivity.\u00a0The project consists of four parts:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/connecting-for-wildlife\/identification\/\"><strong>1) IDENTIFICATION:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Using\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">computer models, a statewide\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">roadkill\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">database, expert and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">local opinion, BEAT will suss out \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">20-40 road segments that hold the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">greatest potential to increase<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0habitat connectivity while also making the roads safer for motorists<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/linking-landscapes-for-wildlife-2\/connecting-for-wildlifesurveying\/\"><strong>2) SURVEYING:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>BEAT will refine a nationally recognized\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">survey protocol, train survey teams,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">then measure, document,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">and photograph<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">\u00a0road segments<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">.<\/span>\u00a0Furthermore, via Berkshire Wildlife Trackers (BWT), certified wildlife trackers will conduct line-intercept wildlife tracking to calibrate computer model data in order to better understand where\u00a0and how infrastructure affects wildlife movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/linking-landscapes-for-wildlife-2\/connecting-for-wildlifereporting-and-analysis\/\"><strong>3) REPORTING and ANALYSIS:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>BEAT will analyze and summarize findings, create written\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 19px;\">reports, build an ArcGIS database, and disseminate data to appropriate agencies and individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/linking-landscapes-for-wildlife-2\/connecting-for-wildlifeaction\/\"><strong>4) ACTION:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>A summary of transportation ecology news in Massachusetts.
