{"id":2547,"date":"2011-01-07T17:49:01","date_gmt":"2011-01-07T21:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T13:24:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T17:24:43","slug":"previous-issues","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/previous-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Previous and Other Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"generaltext\"><em>Some of our previous work, listed alphabetically.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a title=\"Barker Road\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/barker-road\/\">Barker Road:<\/a> The work just wouldn&#8217;t stop!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/beat-partners-to-get-drugs-out-of-our-wetlands\/\">BEAT Partners to get pharmaceuticals out of our wetlands:<\/a> \u00a0BEAT partnered with\u00a0Berkshire United Way, the Berkshire Attorney General\u2019s Office, Berkshire Health Systems, and a number of other groups in\u00a0an effort to take back unused prescription drugs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/bcc-soccer-fields\/\">Berkshire Community College Soccer Field<\/a>: An important part of BEAT\u2019s founding history. On November 22, 1989, the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program certified a vernal pool on the campus of Berkshire Community College and notified the Pittsfield Conservation Commission. In June 1999, plans to improve nearby soccer fields brought this long-used teaching site into focus and helped shape BEAT\u2019s early work at the intersection of development, education, and natural resource protection.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Churchill Estates\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/churchill-estates\/\">Churchill Estates:<\/a> Success! &#8211; Developer had plans to build 39 houses with septic systems on Pittsfield&#8217;s only non-polluted, medium-yield aquifer. The plan is now for just 8 or 9 houses as allowed by right under Massachusetts &#8220;Approval Not Required&#8221; (ANR) zoning law.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"generaltext\" href=\"illegal-dumping-behind-federal-archives-site\">Federal Archives Site &#8211; Illegal Dumping Behind the Federal Archives?<\/a> A hunter stumbled upon this illegal dump site and reported it to BEAT. We turned it in. It went to court. The court said &#8220;Fix it.&#8221; <span class=\"style2\"><strong>2007 update &#8211; The site still has major erosion problems. In April 2007, the Director of the Western Regional Office of Mass. Department of Environmental Protection joined BEAT&#8217;s Executive Director to walk the site and see the problems first hand. Still no action 2013.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a title=\"Fred Garner Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/fred-garner-park\/\">Fred Garner Park<\/a> &#8211; On Pomeroy Ave in Pittsfield, this park was a staging site for much of the remediation of the 1.5 mile stretch of river. It is now restored and has a canoe launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a title=\"Great Barrington Fairgrounds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/great-barrington-fairgrounds\/\">Great Barrington Fairgrounds: <\/a>&#8211; This page talks about the MEPA review for development plans back in 2006. It does not have any information on the 2013 plans.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Greylock Glen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/greylock-glen\/\">Greylock Glen<\/a> &#8211; Learn more about this beautiful, 1,060 acre site at the base of Mount Greylock that keeps being the center of controversial development projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a title=\"Housatonic Railroad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/housatonic-railroad\/\">Housatonic Railroad<\/a> &#8211; This relatively short set of rail lines causes lots of environmental problems &#8211; and it seems as if their trains derail frequently. Take a look and see how citizens worried about &#8220;stuff&#8221; in the river averted a major train disaster in Pittsfield.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Inflow and Infiltration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/inflow-and-infiltration\/\">Inflow &amp; Infiltration<\/a> &#8211; How water gets into the pipes that carry city sewage and causes the sewer treatment plants to overflow, and what the City of Pittsfield is doing to correct the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a href=\"king-street-dump\/\">King Street Dump <\/a>&#8211; on the West Branch of the Housatonic River<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Tel-Electric Dam (Mill Street Dam)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/tel-electric-dam-mill-street-dam\/\">Mill Street Dam<\/a> &#8211; Also called the Tel-Electric Dam<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"New Marlborough Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/new-marlborough-hill\/\">New Marlborough Hill:<\/a> A proposed development in what was a beautiful site. We have some issues with the project. We&#8217;re keeping our eyes on it.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Pines At Bousquet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/the-pines-at-bousquet\/\">Pines at Bousquet Mountain<\/a>: A 105-unit condominium development at Bousquet Ski Area that bears close\u00a0watching. We&#8217;ll keep you posted.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pittsfield Airport Expansion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/pittsfield-airport-expansion\/\">Pittsfield Municipal Airport expansion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"generaltext\"><a title=\"Success! Valley Mill Has Found A New Site!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebeatnews.org\/BeatTeam\/success-valley-mill-has-found-a-new-site\/\">Riverside Waste Transfer Station (Valley Mill):<\/a><span class=\"generaltext\"> A waste transfer station so close to the river and in such a beautiful area? <\/span> <span class=\"style1 style2\"> Update! November 19, 2005. Now we can celebrate! Valley Mill has decided to abandon plans to build a waste transfer station on the bank of the Housatonic River and has found a new site for their operation. This is not allowed under the Wetlands Protection Act regualtions. The two NOIs should be combined into one. Also, the City appears to have been doing work on this site in violation of the current Order of Conditions (permit).
