SUMMARY:Night Bites & Insights
DESCRIPTION:Join the Unitarian Universalist Meeting of South Berkshire for an evening of delicious food and eye-popping conversation! \n‘Climate change’ and ‘global warming’ are misleading phrases. We’re not advocating conspiracy theories here but recognizing that these phrases lull us into thinking climate turmoil is something that is off in the future and far away from the Berkshires. ‘Extreme weather’ might be a better way to describe the local effects that we have already seen. \nUUMSB will host Night Bites & Insights on Tuesday\, April 7th at 5:30 p.m. featuring a spaghetti dinner and conversation with atmospheric scientist Dr. Anton Seimon. Anton Seimon is a six-time National Geographic Society grantee and interdisciplinary scientist with projects on four continents ranging from long-term monitoring of climate change impacts in the Andes to the Inside Tornadoes project over the U.S. Great Plains. Dr. Seimon teaches climate science at Bard College’s Center for Environmental Policy. \nA $5 spaghetti dinner – including vegetarian options\, salad\, bread\, and dessert – will be open to the public at 5:30 PM while Dr. Seimon shares slides and information about past events such as The Great Barrington Tornado and The Butternut Fire as well as insights about things we can expect in the future. Q&A will follow Dr. Seimon’s remarks. \nLearn more and register at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/night-bites-insights-tickets-1984131828711?aff=oddtdtcreator&utm_source=email&utm_medium=sparkpost&utm_campaign=postpublish#location \nDATE: Tuesday\, April 7\nTIME: 5:30pm – 7:00pm\nLOCATION: Unitarian Universalist Meeting of South Berkshire\, 1089 Main Street\, Great Barrington\, MA 01236

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - How Shall We Live? Berkshire Youth Artists Explore Their Relationship with the Earth in the Time of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is part of the How Shall We Live? Climate Art Show\, a Berkshire-wide program organized by Living the Change — Berkshires that invites students to explore climate change through art and reflection. \nIn this show\, Berkshire County high school students explore their relationship with the Earth through visual art and reflection. Responding to questions such as: \n• What does nature provide?         \n• What matters most?\n• What are the earth’s needs?\n• What is resilience?\n• Where do you find guidance and inspiration? \nStudents created artworks expressing their thoughts\, emotions\, fears\, and hope. \nAlong with the artwork\, students also prepared short artist statements\, many of which are powerful and deeply moving. Together\, the artworks and writings offer a window into how young people are experiencing this moment in time—revealing both the uncertainty they face and their resilience\, creativity\, and care for the natural world. \nAttend the opening reception to celebrate these remarkable young artists and the conversations their work inspires. \nThis event is organized in collaboration with The Clark Art Institute\, Living the Change Berkshires\, and Cooler Communities. The show will travel to Pittsfield City Hall (including a festive opening during First Friday Art Walk in May) and Dewey Hall in Sheffield from June 12 through June 20. \nThis show is made possible through generous support from the Feigenbaum Foundation\, Lee Bank\, and Greylock Federal Credit Union. \nDATE: Saturday\, April 18\nTIME: 2:30pm – 5:00pm\nLOCATION: Clark Art Institute\, Hunter Studio\, Lunder Center\, 225 South St\, Williamstown\, MA 01267

SUMMARY:Joint Hike: Berkshire Natural Resources Council and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
DESCRIPTION:Join the BNRC and OLLI at BCC for this spring loop hike at Mahanna Cobble. This outing is rated moderate to difficult with both up and downhill stretches. The hike will be around 3 miles. Registration opens April 6 at 9am on OLLI’s website. \nMahanna Cobble is the northern anchor of The High Road\, a trail which will eventually become a series of connected trails that will run the length of Berkshire County. The trail begins in the Bosquet Mountain parking lot. Beginning with a steep climb\, it winds through the eastern side of Lenox Mountain to the top of the cobble. In April\, spring wildflowers will be blooming along the way\, an added treat on this beautifully constructed trail. A bench honoring founding BNRC Executive Director\, George Wislocki and the typical boulders of the Berkshires five cobbles\, offer places to rest at the cobble while enjoying the unbroken view to the south. This trail is moderate to difficult due to the elevation gain. Please consider this before signing up for the hike. \nHiking poles are strongly recommended\, and good hiking shoes are essential. \nIf we need to cancel the hike due to rain\, we will notify participants by email by 7:00 AM the day of the hike. \nRegister and learn more at this link: https://berkshireolli.org/event-6613888 \nDATE: Wednesday\, April 22\nTIME: 9:30am – 11:30am\nLOCATION: Mahanna Cobble\, Pittsfield. SUMMARY:Spring Ephemeral Botany Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Women on the Land for an educational wildflower walk! Early spring is an exciting time\, and the changing of the seasons is often marked by the emergence of spring ephemeral wildflowers. These plants have a short window of time in which they bloom\, often appearing after the melting of snow but before trees leaf out. Spring ephemerals are especially diverse in rich hardwood forests\, which are common throughout Berkshire County. Women on the Land will be joined by Peter Grima\, DCR Service Forester and botanist\, to explore the wonder of these short-lived blooms at Field Farm\, a mix of fields and forests overlying limestone bedrock. You will learn about the ecology\, identification\, and beauty of these plants that\, if you aren’t there at the right time\, you’ll miss them until next year! \nRegistrants should come prepared for potentially wet/muddy trail conditions. The walk will cover 2-3 miles on existing trails over more or less level terrain. Optional items include a hand lens\, binoculars\, and wildflower field guide. \nRegister at this link: https://tinyurl.com/SpringEphemeralWalk. \nDATE: Saturday\, April 25 \nTIME: 1:00pm – 3:00pm \nLOCATION: Field Farm Reservation\, Williamstown\, MA
