Spring is an exciting time to witness some entertaining displays\, like that of the hooded merganser or the eerie but beautiful sounds of the wood duck as they settle into their breeding grounds. We will tour the Berkshire lakes and ponds\, beginning with Richmond Pond in search of spring’s great diversity of waterfowl. \nSession 2– Spring Warblers by Sight and Sound at Lime Kiln Farm \nSaturday\, May 21 @ 7:30 — 10:00 AM \nSift though the challenging but rewarding migrating warblers as they refuel on their swift journey back to their breeding grounds. Binoculars and ears are the best equipment for this workshop! \nSession 3– Birding by Ear at Pleasant Valley \nSaturday\, June 11 @ 8:00 — 10:00 AM \nSpring birdsong is a symphony worth hearing and an insight into the world of our feathered friends. Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is a great spot for learning bird song in the forest\, fields\, and wetlands. We will dive into the world of birdsong\, from woodpeckers to warblers. Bring binoculars if you’d like\, but your ears are the only requirement. \nRegistration is required to join these events. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike: The Brief but Wondrous Life of Early Spring Wildflowers

Their brief lifespan is part of what makes them so special – and easy to miss! Join Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC) for a walk along the Old Mill Trail to catch these beautiful flowering plants before they are gone. We will learn about the unique ecological partnerships they form\, and what makes the Berkshires such a fantastic place for wildflowers to thrive.   \nThis walk will be approximately 3 miles round trip\, with little elevation gain. Our pace will be moderate\, with occasional stopping along the way. Participants may choose to turn around halfway once the accessible portion of the trail ends. Please bring water\, a snack\, and wear shoes suitable for muddy conditions.

SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Plunge — Training
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays\, April 16 & 23 @ 10:00 AM — 1:00 PM \nHilltown Land Trust is partnering with the Wild & Scenic Westfield River Committee to offer their annual Vernal Pool Plunge! This two-day\, in-person training event is open to anyone interested in learning about the ecology of and becoming advocates for vernal pools in Western Massachusetts\, including how to certify vernal pools. \nParticipants should commit to attending both sessions (04/16 and 04/23). This training is aimed at individuals and families (appropriate for anyone 13 and older) looking to understand these small wetlands that may be on their land or in their towns. \nAfter the two in-person field days\, participants will have the opportunity to attend weekly online sessions after April 23rd that delve into the technical side of vernal pool certification. These trainings will guide participants through the process of certifying vernal pools that are not yet certified through the state of Massachusetts. We will go over online resources such as using MassMapper and uploading vernal pool data to the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (NHESP) site. \nDay 1: We will be seated inside (masks required) for a 1-hour recorded presentation followed by a Q&A with local Naturalist Charley Eiseman. After a short break\, we will move outside to a guided tour by Charley of the vernal pools on the property. We will provide clipboards\, handouts\, and reference materials. Bring waterproof knee-high boots\, comfortable hiking clothing\, bug spray\, water\, snacks\, and any field notebooks you want to use. Be sure to check the weather ahead of time\, as this event will be held rain or shine! \nDay 2: Field day for participants to practice gathering the information required for vernal pool certification. Charley will be there to answer questions\, but attendees will be more independent on this day. Precise location and details will be given at the first day of the event on April 16th. \n  \nRegistration is required. Click here to sign up and learn more.
