SUMMARY:Letting Nature Lead: The Promise of Passive Rewilding
DESCRIPTION:Join Shelby Perry of Northeast Wilderness Trust for an informative conversation about forest conservation. \n\n\nJoin us for a conversation about restraint\, respect\, and the long view of forest conservation. \n\n\n\n\nPassive rewilding is the practice of stepping back and allowing forests to grow and change on their own. In this event\, we’ll explore what that looks like in practice\, and why it matters. \nTogether\, we’ll consider the benefits of letting natural processes unfold\, reflect on the difference between human and forest timescales\, and think about the value of future old-growth forests whether or not we’re here to see them. \nShelby Perry is the Wildlands Ecology Director at Northeast Wilderness Trust. She oversees all aspects of the Wildlands Ecology program\, which conducts\, supports\, and shares ecological research pertaining to wildlands and inventories ecological values on the Wilderness Trust’s protected lands. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. in Plant Biology – Field Naturalist from the University of Vermont\, and speaks and presents frequently around the Northeast on wildlands\, rewilding\, and old forests. When not working in them\, Shelby can usually be found playing in wild forests\, exploring them on foot\, in snowshoes\, or through the lens of her camera. \nLearn more and register at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/letting-nature-lead-the-promise-of-passive-rewilding-tickets-1986267147507?aff=oddtdtcreator \n\n\nDATE: Wednesday\, May 27\nTIME: 6:00pm – 7:00pm\nLOCATION: North Adams Public Library\, 74 Church St\, North Adams\, MA 01247

SUMMARY:Forms and Transformations in the Butterfly World
DESCRIPTION:The West Stockbridge Historical Society Presents: Forms and Transformations in the Butterfly World. \nNext up in the Berkshire Nature Talk Series: \nRyan Shea\, The Nature Institute \nButterflies are among nature’s most captivating organisms\, dazzling us with their colors\, patterns\, and the remarkable transformation from caterpillar to winged adult. But what can they teach us about the deeper rhythms of the natural world? In this talk\, Ryan Shea invites us to slow down and truly observe butterflies: to notice how their shapes and colors shift and transform\, and to help us discover a “living understanding of nature.” He draws on an approach to nature observation developed by the German writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, which asks us to follow what we actually see rather than jump to explanation. \nAbout the Speaker: Ryan Shea is a researcher and educator at The Nature Institute in Ghent\, New York\, where he explores how people can develop a deeper\, more meaningful connection with the natural world — with a special focus on plants and insects. \n$10 suggested donation for nonmembers. \nDATE: Friday\, May 15\nTIME: 7:00pm – 8:30pm\nLOCATION: Old Town Hall\, 9 Main St\, West Stockbridge\, MA 01266

SUMMARY:Joint Hike: Berkshire Natural Resources Council and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
DESCRIPTION:Join the BNRC and OLLI at BCC for this spring loop hike at Mahanna Cobble. This outing is rated moderate to difficult with both up and downhill stretches. The hike will be around 3 miles. Registration opens April 6 at 9am on OLLI’s website. \nMahanna Cobble is the northern anchor of The High Road\, a trail which will eventually become a series of connected trails that will run the length of Berkshire County. The trail begins in the Bosquet Mountain parking lot. Beginning with a steep climb\, it winds through the eastern side of Lenox Mountain to the top of the cobble. In April\, spring wildflowers will be blooming along the way\, an added treat on this beautifully constructed trail. A bench honoring founding BNRC Executive Director\, George Wislocki and the typical boulders of the Berkshires five cobbles\, offer places to rest at the cobble while enjoying the unbroken view to the south. SUMMARY:Opening Reception - How Shall We Live? Berkshire Youth Artists Explore Their Relationship with the Earth in the Time of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is part of the How Shall We Live? Climate Art Show\, a Berkshire-wide program organized by Living the Change — Berkshires that invites students to explore climate change through art and reflection. \nIn this show\, Berkshire County high school students explore their relationship with the Earth through visual art and reflection. Responding to questions such as: \n• What does nature provide?         \n• What matters most?\n• What are the earth’s needs?\n• What is resilience?\n• Where do you find guidance and inspiration? \nStudents created artworks expressing their thoughts\, emotions\, fears\, and hope. \nAlong with the artwork\, students also prepared short artist statements\, many of which are powerful and deeply moving. Together\, the artworks and writings offer a window into how young people are experiencing this moment in time—revealing both the uncertainty they face and their resilience\, creativity\, and care for the natural world. \nAttend the opening reception to celebrate these remarkable young artists and the conversations their work inspires. \nThis event is organized in collaboration with The Clark Art Institute\, Living the Change Berkshires\, and Cooler Communities. The show will travel to Pittsfield City Hall (including a festive opening during First Friday Art Walk in May) and Dewey Hall in Sheffield from June 12 through June 20. \nThis show is made possible through generous support from the Feigenbaum Foundation\, Lee Bank\, and Greylock Federal Credit Union. \nDATE: Saturday\, April 18\nTIME: 2:30pm – 5:00pm\nLOCATION: Clark Art Institute\, Hunter Studio\, Lunder Center\, 225 South St\, Williamstown\, MA 01267
